Understanding Ubuntu

So I've obviously been making a big deal about the release of Ubuntu 9.04 since it dropped early this past Thursday. I've been seeding the 32-bit desktop versions over BitTorrent for the past few days, both the live CD and the alternate text-based installer, along with the server version.

From my experience the live CD is a little less than twice as popular as the text-based installer. That's not all that surprising as Ubuntu, at least in my usage, is often installed on older hardware with which the live CD doesn't always play nice. One computer at The Quill was a particular example of this last week.

The server appears to be much less popular then the desktop version which is also to be expected but I somehow expected more. Ubuntu is not know for its server version, however. It's so far been much more of a desktop OS.

If you haven't yet downloaded the new operating system visit the link below and give it a try:

You can run it straight off the CD or install it on your computer either alone or alongside another OS such as Windows. You may also want to run it inside VirtualBox, particularly I think if you have a Mac OS X machine:

Stay tuned this week for details about the big move to Saskatoon!
