Boxing Day

This year I will not be shopping on Boxing Day.

Why? Due to the fact that it makes no sense! Black Friday, the equivalent in the States, whether you love it or hate it makes far more sense. Black Friday is designed to get people shopping for gifts in an attempt to gain dedication from shoppers towards retail brands for the most important shopping period of the year.

Boxing Day is for what? Encouraging us to buy things for ourselves the day after what is meant to be the most selfless day of the year? People with gift cards have to shop at specific retailers, sales or no sales, so that has nothing to do with it. And while there is a small amount of clearance to deal with, wrapping paper and the such, the concept of just-in-time inventory management has all but eliminated the need for a serious clearance effort.

So I call on retailers, eliminate this antiquated retail effort in favour of either a stronger pre-christmas push or better discounting in January when we're all feeling the pinch from the credit cards in our pockets...
